A Field Guide to Every Fluid Your Body Makes During Sex (And What's Actually True About All of It)
Let's Just Say It: Fluid Confusion Is Nearly Universal
If you've ever wondered whether what's happening with your body during sex is normal — whether there's too much, too little, the wrong kind, or something you can't quite explain — you are in extremely good company. Sexual fluids are one of the most consistently misunderstood aspects of human physiology, and the misinformation runs deep. Pornography distorts it. Health class skips it. Even a lot of doctors aren't great at explaining it.
So let's fix that. Here's what's actually coming out, where it's coming from, and why the difference matters more than you might think.
Fluid #1: Vaginal Lubrication (The Baseline)
When sexual arousal begins, the vaginal walls produce lubrication through a process called vaginal transudation. Despite the clinical name, it's straightforward: increased blood flow to the genitals causes fluid to seep through the vaginal walls. This isn't a gland secreting something — it's plasma filtering through tissue. The result is the slippery, clear-to-slightly-cloudy fluid that makes penetration comfortable and is often the first sign of physical arousal.
A few things worth knowing:
It varies enormously between people and situations. Hydration, hormonal cycle phase, stress levels, medications (especially antihistamines, SSRIs, and hormonal contraceptives), and age all affect how much lubrication the body produces. Less lubrication does not mean less arousal. This cannot be overstated — the mind-body connection here is genuinely unreliable, and someone can be mentally highly aroused with minimal physical lubrication, or physically lubricating with relatively low subjective desire.
It's mildly acidic. The vaginal environment maintains a pH between 3.8 and 4.5, and lubrication reflects that. This acidity is part of how the vagina protects itself from bacterial overgrowth. It also means that semen — which is alkaline — temporarily shifts vaginal pH after ejaculation, which is why some people notice a change in discharge or smell afterward.
Lube is not a failure. Using external lubricant doesn't mean your body isn't working. It means you're being smart about comfort.
Fluid #2: Bartholin's Gland Secretions
Located on either side of the vaginal opening, the Bartholin's glands produce a small amount of fluid during arousal — typically just a few drops. For a long time, these glands were credited with most vaginal lubrication. Current research has largely revised that understanding; they contribute, but the majority of lubrication comes from transudation.
Most people never notice Bartholin's gland secretions specifically, but they matter for a different reason: these glands can become blocked or infected, causing a Bartholin's cyst or abscess. If you've ever noticed a painful lump near the vaginal opening, that's likely what's going on, and it's worth a doctor's visit.
Fluid #3: Cervical Mucus (The Underrated One)
This one gets almost no attention in conversations about sexual fluids, which is a shame because it's fascinating. The cervix produces mucus throughout the menstrual cycle, and its consistency changes dramatically depending on where you are hormonally.
Around ovulation, cervical mucus becomes clear, stretchy, and abundant — often described as resembling raw egg whites. This is the fertile window, and the mucus is literally designed to help sperm travel. At other points in the cycle, it's thicker, cloudier, and scant. People who track their cycles using fertility awareness methods use these changes as data.
During arousal and sexual activity, this mucus can mix with vaginal lubrication, altering the texture or volume of what you notice. If you've ever been puzzled by discharge that seems particularly different on certain days, the cervix is probably involved.
Fluid #4: Female Ejaculation
Here's where things get genuinely interesting — and where the science is more settled than the cultural conversation suggests.
Female ejaculation refers to the expulsion of fluid from the Skene's glands, which are located near the urethra and are considered the functional equivalent of the male prostate. Research — including a notable 2015 study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine — has analyzed this fluid and found that it contains prostate-specific antigen (PSA), prostatic acid phosphatase, and glucose. It is chemically distinct from urine.
This fluid is typically produced in small amounts — often not noticeable as a separate event — and may be expelled during orgasm or intense stimulation of the anterior vaginal wall (the area associated with G-spot sensation). It's clear to milky in appearance and has little to no odor.
Important: not everyone with a vulva has functional Skene's glands, and those who do vary significantly in how much fluid they produce. The absence of ejaculation is not a sign that something's missing.
Fluid #5: Squirting — The One With the Most Mythology
Squirting — the expulsion of larger volumes of fluid during sexual activity — is the fluid type with the biggest gap between cultural mythology and scientific reality. Porn has sold it as evidence of spectacular orgasm, simultaneously rare and aspirational. The actual biology is more complicated and, depending on your perspective, either more or less glamorous.
The same 2015 study mentioned above used ultrasound to examine what happens in the bladder during squirting and found that the fluid expelled in large volumes is primarily urine — specifically, diluted urine that collects in the bladder during arousal. The bladder fills even in people who have recently urinated, and the fluid expelled during squirting, while containing some Skene's gland secretions, is predominantly from the bladder.
This does not mean squirting is 'just peeing.' The physiological context is different, the experience is different, and the fluid composition — while urine-based — is not identical to regular urination. But the idea that squirting is some separate, exotic secretion from a mysterious erogenous source? That's marketing, not biology.
For people who experience it: completely normal. For people who don't: also completely normal, and no amount of technique is going to manufacture a response your body isn't wired to produce.
Why This Actually Matters
Understanding what your body produces during sex isn't just trivia. It affects how you interpret your own experiences, how you communicate with partners, and how you recognize when something might actually warrant medical attention.
A sudden change in discharge outside of sexual activity can signal infection. Unusual pain during arousal can indicate a Bartholin's cyst. Dryness that affects daily comfort — not just sex — may reflect hormonal changes worth discussing with a provider.
Knowing the difference between 'this is my body doing its normal thing' and 'this is new and worth checking out' requires actually knowing what your body's normal thing is. And that knowledge starts with dropping the shame long enough to get curious.
Your body is not gross. It's not mysterious in a bad way. It's doing a series of coordinated, purposeful things — and you deserve to understand all of them.
